I am sold on thematic units. They work! Students enjoy learning and the results are terrific.
Hi, I'm Kathy George
. I received a B.S. in Education from Miami University in Ohio. I have taught 2nd through 4th graders for 18 years. From classrooms in Ohio to Massachusetts, Illinois to Florida. I have discovered that kids are the same everywhere. Kids are enthusiastic and eager learners when they are actively involved and when the lessons are interesting.
What works for me to encourage and maintain this student motivation is to teach using thematic units. I've found themes enrich the curriculum and provide a natural way to integrate the content areas. Themes offer a method that attempts to reach the educational needs and levels of all of my students. And, by offering a variety of activities, I can meet all styles of learning.
My 3rd grade colleagues and I enjoy developing thematic units to use during the school year. Working together is fun for us and keeps us sharp. We search for activities that are interesting and that reach our student's wide range of needs and differing learning styles. Many activities are hands-on and involve cooperative group projects. To integrate the content areas, we include reading, math, writing, research, science, social studies, and art ideas. All have been kid tested! We judge success by the positive reaction of our students and by the results of their achievements.
